Pre Op and Post Op Care

Nitrous Oxide Sedation: The Gentle Approach

Nitrous oxide, affectionately known as "laughing gas," is a trusted solution in pediatric dentistry for its mild and safe sedative effects. When inhaled, it helps children relax comfortably during dental procedures, allowing them to respond better to treatment without losing consciousness. Kids remain fully alert and able to interact, and the gas quickly leaves the body once normal breathing resumes.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Easing Dental Anxiety

Oral conscious sedation involves a safe, orally-administered sedative that helps children manage dental anxiety. Monitored closely by our pediatric dentists, this method allows children to feel relaxed throughout their dental treatment, making it a less stressful experience.

IV Sedation for Comprehensive Dental Care

For extensive dental procedures or for children who find it difficult to cooperate due to youth or special needs, IV sedation is an excellent option. Administered and monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist in our office, IV sedation ensures that children sleep through their procedures without any recollection, fostering a fear-free relationship with dental care. Detailed pre- and post-sedation instructions are provided to ensure safety and comfort.

Post-Operative Care Guidelines

After Local Anesthetic:

Post-treatment, areas treated with local anesthetic may remain numb for several hours. Children often do not recognize this numbness, which can lead to accidental bites or injuries. Monitor your child closely, opting for a liquid or soft diet until the effects fully wear off.

After Dental Trauma:

Keep the affected area clean and monitor for any signs of infection or nerve damage, such as darkening teeth or recurring swelling. Use ice initially to minimize swelling and maintain a soft diet for a few days. Follow all prescribed treatments, including antibiotics or pain management.

After Tooth Extractions:

Post-extraction, ensure your child avoids actions like sucking or chewing on the numb areas. Restrict rinsing, spitting, or drinking with a straw for the day. Any bleeding should be managed with firm pressure using gauze or a tea bag. Maintain a soft diet and limit physical activity for a day or two.

Care of Dental Sealants:

Sealants play a crucial role in preventing decay on the chewing surfaces of teeth by blocking out plaque and food. It's important to avoid hard foods that could dislodge the sealant and to maintain good oral hygiene to protect areas that the sealant does not cover.

Oral Discomfort After Cleaning:

It's normal for some tenderness and swelling to occur after a dental cleaning. This can generally be managed with salt water rinses and appropriate over-the-counter pain medication. Proper oral hygiene is essential to reduce inflammation and maintain gum health.
